1. OBJECTIVE:
To
provide guidelines to handle the electrical installations and equipments
safely.
2. SCOPE:
To ensure safety and
prevention of electrical shocks, fire and explosions
3. INTRODUCTION:
Electrical
installations, equipments, line conductors cause potential dangers and can
cause fire accidents, shocks and deaths if handled carelessly. Even low
voltages as 220 V and 110 V can cause injury and deaths. Extreme care must be
exercised and protective equipments must be used by all personnel handling the
electrical equipments.
4.
PRECAUTIONS:
4.1. Only authorized and
competent personnel should handle electrical installations and repairs.
4.2. Tools used must be
well insulated to prevent direct contact with the electricity.
4.3. Rubber gloves must be
worn by the personnel and rubber mats should be used on the floors while
Handling
electrical installations to prevent electrical shocks.
4.4. The areas surrounding
the equipments should be kept always dry.
5.
PROCEDURE:
5.1 Switch
off main power supply before taking up any maintenance or repair of Electrical equipments
or
installations.
5.2 Affix
tag out / lock out tables on the equipments and machinery.
5.3 Remove
energy supplies like steam and air to the equipments
5.4 Put a
caution board “DANGER DO NOT OPERATE.
5.5 As an
additional precaution remove the fuses.
5.6 People
attending the work should wear protective equipment like rubber gloves, safety
shoes and
use
wooden plates or rubber mats to stand on.

5.7 After
completion of repair or maintenance works replace the covers and enclosures on
cabinets.
5.8 Replace
the fuses and switch on the main power supply and check for the power supply in
all the
phases
with a test lamp or tester before actually switching on the Equipment or
machinery.
5.9 When
everything is satisfactory remove the tag out / lock out labels and caution boards
and tools
from
the place.
6. RESPONSIBILITY : 1) Maintenance Dept.
2)
All Production Depts.
7.
FREEQUENCY :
SOP revised as per due date.
8. REVIEW
GUIDE : Log book.
