1. OBJECTIVE: To
provide guidelines for proper and effective usage of fire fighting
Equipments.
2. SCOPE: To lay down
procedures and train personnel for proper usage of firefighting equipments and
Ensure immediate response
in case of fire.
3.
PRECAUTIONS:
3.1. Depending on
the type of fire, proper type of equipment as per the details given in Annexure
should
be used.
3.2. Only authorized and
trained personnel should handle the fire fighting equipments.
3.3. Power supply to the
areas affected should be immediately cut off.
3.4. Personnel should wear
protective equipments while carrying out extinguishing operations.
3.5. Gas masks should be
used while handling the fire fighting equipments especially in case of “C” type
equipments.
4. PROCEDURE:
Method of operation of each
type of fire fighting equipment differs. The most commonly used fire fighting
equipments in Pharmaceutical industries are of: “A”, “B” & “C” type of fire
extinguishers.
(A) OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR “A” TYPE:
“A” type fire extinguishers
contain water with suspended carbon dioxide. It is used in case of fires
associated with paper, wood and plastic items etc.
4.1. Remove the
extinguisher from the clamp and bring to the spot and hold the equipment up
right.
4.2. Remove the safety clip
on the equipment.
4.3. Press the knob on the
top hard either with hand or with any hard object.
4.4. Apply on the flames
till the equipment is exhausted.

4.5. Inform the outside
contractor for refilling of equipment immediately.
4.6. Place the refilled
equipment in its own place with new status label.
4.7. Refilling should be
done by the out side contractor on the due dates.
(B) OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR “B” TYPE (BC TYPE):
BC type contains dry
chemical powder and is used in fires associated with chemicals, drugs, foods
and inflammable solvents and gases.
4.1. Remove the
extinguisher from the clamp and bring to the spot and hold the equipment up
right.
4.2. Remove the safety clip
on the equipment.
4.3. Press the knob on the
top hard either with hand or with any hard object.
4.4. Apply on the flames
till the equipment is exhausted.
4.5. Inform the outside
contractor for refilling of equipment immediately.

(C) OPERATING INSTRUCTIIONS FOR “C” TYPE:
C type contains only carbon
dioxide gas which is used exclusively in fires associated with electricity.
4.1. Remove the
extinguisher from the clamp and bring to the spot and hold the equipment up
right.
4.2. Remove the safety clip
on the equipment.
4.3. Press the knob on the
top hard either with hand or with any hard object.
4.4. Apply on the flames
till the equipment is exhausted.
4.4. Inform the outside
contractor for refilling of equipment immediately.
4.5. Place the refilled
equipment in its own place with new status label.
4.6. Refilling should be
done by the out side contractor on the due dates.
(D) TRAINING: Training
Programme held once a year to all members of staff, workmen & security.
