STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

SUBJECT :
HANDLING OF STEAM AND AIR.

DEPARTMENT  : SAFETY
SOP NO.                      : 06/S
Page No                       : 1 of  2
Effective Date             : 05.01.2012

1. OBJECTIVE:
To provide guidelines to handle steam and air properly as they could cause damage to men and machinery if not handled properly and carefully.

2. INTRODUCTION:

Steam and compressed air are widely used utilities and it is important to train the people for proper handling of the same and make them aware of the potential hazards if not handled properly.

3. PROCEDURE:

3.1. Sudden release of steam pressure into blocked vessels or pipes can cause lot of pressure and
equipment failures by thermal shock. Hence the steam should be slowly released by properly
       operating the steam inlet valves.
3.2. While cleaning the equipment with steam , the vent valves should be kept opened and steam
        condensate should be drained continuously.
3.3. While releasing the steam into the jacketed vessels, it should be released gradually and slowly.
3.4. Steam line should be continuously checked for leakages. The valves, glands, air vent or relief valves
should be checked regularly for leakages and leakages should be immediately rectified if found.
3.5. The steam pipe should be checked for corrosion and any corrosion found should be immediately
       rectified.
3.6. Regular maintenance and servicing of boilers and steam lines is necessary for effective steam
       production.
3.7. Insulation on the steam pipes should also be checked regularly and any damages should be rectified
       immediately to reduce heat loses.
3.8. Compressed air is used for blowing of dust in the production areas and packaging machines. The air
should be cleaned and filtered through filters to make it free from particles or otherwise it will
contaminate the atmosphere or choke the air syringes.
3.9.   The air compressors should be kept in order and should be maintained properly and regularly
         serviced

         should be immediately replaced.
3.11. The pipe ends should be connected tightly.
